How MD5 works
MD5 is a legacy message-digest algorithm that takes input of any length and always produces a fixed 128-bit digest, usually shown as 32 hexadecimal characters.
The output is deterministic — the same input always yields the same hash — while a single changed bit produces a completely different digest (the avalanche effect).
MD5 is considered broken for security purposes because practical collision attacks exist. Use it only for legacy checksums, never for passwords or signatures.
Key features
- Compute MD5 from text or files
- Lowercase or uppercase hex output
- Instant, one-click hashing
- Deterministic results
- Runs 100% in your browser
- Files never leave your device
Privacy guarantee
All hashing is performed locally in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Your text and files are never uploaded, never stored, and never logged.
How to generate a hash
- 1
Enter text or choose a file
Type or paste your text, or switch to the File tab and drop a file.
- 2
Compute the hash
The MD5 digest is calculated instantly as you type or once the file is loaded.
- 3
Copy the digest
Copy the 32-character hex digest for integrity checks, verification, or storage.
Frequently asked questions
What is MD5 used for?
MD5 is mostly used for legacy checksums and non-security file verification.
Can a hash be reversed?
No. Hash functions are one-way by design — you cannot recover the original input from the digest.
Does my file leave my device?
No. All computation happens locally in your browser.
