How SHA-256 works

SHA-256 is a cryptographic hash function from the SHA-2 family, standardized by NIST. It takes input of any length and always produces a fixed 256-bit (32-byte) digest, usually shown as 64 hexadecimal characters.

The algorithm processes the message in 512-bit blocks through a series of compression rounds using bitwise operations, rotations, and modular addition. The output is deterministic — the same input always yields the same hash — while a single changed bit produces a completely different digest (the avalanche effect).

SHA-256 is one-way and collision-resistant, which makes it a cornerstone of TLS certificates, blockchain, password storage, file integrity checks, and digital signatures.

Key features

  • Compute SHA-256 from text or files
  • Lowercase or uppercase hex output
  • Instant, one-click hashing
  • Deterministic and collision-resistant
  • Runs 100% in your browser
  • Files never leave your device

Privacy guarantee

All hashing is performed locally in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Your text and files are never uploaded, never stored, and never logged.

How to generate a SHA-256 hash

  1. 1

Enter text or choose a file

Type or paste your text, or switch to the File tab and drop a file.

  2. 2

    Compute the hash

The SHA-256 digest is calculated instantly as you type or once the file is loaded.

  3. 3

    Copy the digest

Copy the 64-character hex digest for integrity checks, verification, or storage.

Frequently asked questions

What is SHA-256 used for?

SHA-256 is used for file integrity checks, digital signatures, blockchain, password hashing, and TLS certificates.

Can a SHA-256 hash be reversed?

No. SHA-256 is one-way by design — you cannot recover the original input from the digest.

Is SHA-256 still secure?

Yes. No practical collision has been found for SHA-256, and it remains widely recommended for cryptographic use.

What does a SHA-256 hash look like?

It is always 64 hexadecimal characters (256 bits), for example the digest of "hello" is 2cf24dba5fb0a30e26e83b2ac5b9e29e1b161e5c1fa7425e73043362938b9824.

Does my file leave my device?

No. Hashing runs locally in your browser, so your text and files are never uploaded.
