How passphrases work
A passphrase is a login secret built from several randomly chosen words, such as “correct horse battery staple”. The idea comes from the Diceware method: roll a die several times to pick each word from a list of 7,776 possibilities, then join them into a phrase.
Each randomly chosen word adds about 12.9 bits of entropy. A six-word passphrase therefore carries roughly 77 bits of entropy — far beyond what an attacker can realistically brute-force — while remaining much easier to remember and type than a 16-character string of mixed symbols.
This generator uses your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator (CSPRNG) to pick words from the same word list, giving the strength of the Diceware method without needing physical dice.
Key features

Frequently asked questions
What is a passphrase?
A passphrase is a longer login secret built from multiple random words instead of a short string of mixed characters.
Is a passphrase safer than a password?
It depends on length and randomness. A long random passphrase can be very strong and is often easier to remember than a short complex password.
How is the passphrase generated?
Words are picked with your browser’s cryptographically secure random number generator from a Diceware-style word list, so every phrase is truly random.
Is my passphrase stored or transmitted?
No. Generation runs entirely in your browser and nothing is sent to any server, so your passphrase is never stored or logged.
When should I use a passphrase?
Passphrases are especially useful for master passwords, encrypted vaults, and any login you type manually often.
