How SHA-1 works
SHA-1 is a member of the SHA-1 standard that takes input of any length and always produces a fixed 160-bit digest, usually shown as 40 hexadecimal characters.
The output is deterministic — the same input always yields the same hash — while a single changed bit produces a completely different digest (the avalanche effect).
SHA-1 is no longer considered secure: a practical collision (SHAttered) was published in 2017. Avoid it for new systems.
Key features
- Compute SHA-1 from text or files
- Lowercase or uppercase hex output
- Instant, one-click hashing
- Deterministic results
- Runs 100% in your browser
- Files never leave your device
Privacy guarantee
All hashing is performed locally in your browser using the Web Crypto API. Your text and files are never uploaded, never stored, and never logged.
How to generate a hash
- 1
Enter text or choose a file
Type or paste your text, or switch to the File tab and drop a file.
- 2
Compute the hash
The SHA-1 digest is calculated instantly as you type or once the file is loaded.
- 3
Copy the digest
Copy the 40-character hex digest for integrity checks, verification, or storage.
Frequently asked questions
What is SHA-1 used for?
SHA-1 was widely used in certificates and version control (Git), but is now deprecated for security.
Can a hash be reversed?
No. Hash functions are one-way by design — you cannot recover the original input from the digest.
Does my file leave my device?
No. All computation happens locally in your browser.
